As the man at the helm of the race, Nicolau knows only too well how difficult 2020 will be. "It's been a crazy journey," he says.
At a time when the epidemic has created too much uncertainty and has led to the postponement or outright cancellation of sporting events around the world, Niccolo said it is important for China to be the first to recover.
"The LPL was also suspended for several weeks due to the outbreak, but the tournament resumed on 9 March." In his view, this was not just a simple rematch, which not only generated huge viewing, but also inspired the whole league of Legends professional games.
"After the LPL rematches, we saw a surge in spectators. The LPL's success has inspired professional leagues across all divisions, which were restored by the end of March, with average viewership up by more than 30 percent over the same period last year.
Of course, there is still a big difference between resuming the league and hosting the global finals -- more than 20 teams from all the divisions will have to travel long distances to gather in Shanghai, so the pressure on epidemic prevention and control is particularly acute.
'Shanghai has made everything possible through the efforts of everyone,' Mr. Nicolau said.
"I want to thank Shanghai, whether it's at SMT over the past few weeks, or the magnificent Chinese Art Palace, or the Shanghai Pudong football stadium, which hosted the world Championship final on Saturday -- the first sporting event to be held in this venue."
"Shanghai has given great support to esports, and we thank Shanghai for ensuring the safety of the players, the team and all on-site personnel."
Niccolo believes this would not have happened had it not been for Shanghai, where the outbreak was best managed, and in China, where the government gave more support than ever before in the history of global finals.
"I don't think there is another city in the world that can successfully host the global finals like Shanghai at this time of year. I believe esports in Shanghai will have a sense of resurrection."
